13.08.2026, Neutrality Initiative: Why we are voting "No"
On 27 September 2026, Swiss voters will vote on the Neutrality Initiative. Through its campaign slogan and the misuse of the peace dove, the initiative suggests that a "No" vote on the initiative amounts to a “No” to peace. This is misleading and demagogic. For these and other reasons, we are voting "No". Together with Frieda – the feminist peace organisation, we unequivocally reject the initiative’s content, purpose and form.
The statement is available in German and French. Below a summary of our main arguments against the Neutrality Initiative:
The initiative reduces security to purely military terms.
Peace is more than just the absence of war. A feminist understanding of peace also encompasses protection from violence and discrimination, as well as access to participation and rights for all.
The initiative is unnecessary.
The Federal Council and Parliament reject the initiative. Switzerland’s permanent neutrality has been enshrined in the Swiss Constitution since 1848 and is internationally recognised. Among other things, it forms the basis for Switzerland’s good offices, which enable it to play an effective role in peace processes and to undertake active mediation efforts.
Neutrality does not mean inaction.
The relevance of Switzerland’s peace policy must be safeguarded. Switzerland risks losing its credibility if it fails to act in the face of breaches of international law. The option of non-military measures, including ethically justifiable sanctions, must be maintained.
Misleading arguments and demagoguery exacerbate polarisation.
The campaign suggests that anyone who votes "No" is against peace. PeaceWomen Across the Globe and Frieda unequivocally reject this approach to campaigning: it is misleading, demagogic and creates a false correlation.
We say "No" on 27 September.
The initiative restricts the scope for active peace and human rights work, rather than strengthening it. Security for all people is achieved through protection and prevention, through solidarity and cooperation, not through enforced restraint.
